STEP-BY-STEP

Low Birth Weight

→ The crotch buckle should be low on
the baby’s pelvis, not up high on their
chest (ribs)

→ The crotch buckle should be
supporting the baby’s pelvis instead of sitting far away from their crotch.

→ The harness should be sitting level or slightly above the baby’s shoulders. It should not be able to slide off their shoulders.

This is to prevent the baby from being propelled out of the car seat in a crash.

→ The harness should be close to and running tight across the baby’s hips. Avoid having the straps crossing up to the stomach or over the middle of the baby’s thighs.

→ Two Fingers – no more than two fingers should be able to fit between the harness and the child.

→ Pinch Test – you should not be able to pinch the harness together at the child’s collarbone.

→ Tighten – The harness should be tight enough that it cannot slide off their shoulders.

→ Retighten – with some infant carriers and rear-facing car seats you can pull the harness at the back of the restraint to help make it tighter and then remove the slack with the adjuster strap at the front.
